We have long talked about an open source project as an ecosystem and we have debated open source business models for the past two decades. Recent attempts at measuring open source ecosystems have been tried, but do the measurements allow us to do anything differently? This talk will provide a framework for open source project ecosystems, introduce market ideas for how to think about open source project markets, and look at the role non-profits can play in establishing markets for project growth and success. Along the way, we will review successful market experiments and challenge some of the metrics to build a framework for future project (and non-profit) success.
