A barrier to contribution is a reason for a contributor to give up trying to make a contribution, which negatively impacts growth of the community. Understanding common barriers enables OPOS and community leaders to identify effective means to make their communities more engaging and thereby grow the community. We will share recommendations for how to remove barriers and by presenting a framework of 88 common barriers across three categories: a) technical, b) process, and c) social barriers. The barriers and related recommendations were developed during a research project that the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) sponsored. The framework is based on 2020-2021 data from ~700 survey responses, 20 interviews, was developed by researchers from Bitergia and the Oregon State University, and validated with the ASF community. For most of these barriers, the ASF community shared their input and provided strategies to mitigate the issue.
